It’s Damn Cold In Denver

UPDATE: It is now -11 and falling.

When it gets this cold, I am reminded of when I lived in Arizona.  Farenheit 100 is hot, 105 hotter, of course, but after 110, heat takes on a new dimension.  It is hot on a different level.  It just envelops you, makes your eyes hurt and deep breaths burn.  You feel like you are cooking.

 Below zero, cold has that same quality.  Sure, it’s cold at 20 degrees, colder still at 10.  But below zero, the cold is qualitatively different, a whole new animal.  It creeps past your layers,  makes your eyes hurt and deep breaths burn.  You feel like you are freezing.

It’s that cold tonight.

* * *

While the Eastern half of the country is getting pounded with snow, we only got an inch or so before the sky cleared to let in the deep freeze here in Denver.  The National Weather Service forecast:

Today…Cloudy with flurries. Highs 4 below to zero. North winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to around 25 mph. Wind chill readings 25 below to 35 below zero.

Tonight…Mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of snow in the evening. Lows 16 below to 22 below zero. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph in the evening becoming light. Wind chill readings 25 below to 35 below zero.

Right now it’s -2 degrees, which will probably be the high today.  That’s really cold.  Bring on the climate change.

I think the dog will be walked briskly, and quite briefly, tonight.
