Oops — Hawaii Governor Claims Obama’s Birth Records Exist But Can’t Find Them

For the past couple of years, the media has tried to place “birthers” — those who believe that Obama is not constitutionally qualified to be President because he is not a native-born citizen — into the same odious category as “truthers” who contend that the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 attacks.  These are, of course, extraordinarily different things.

One contends that the idiot-genius George W. Bush orchestrated the deaths of thousands of U.S. citizens.  A more disgusting attack can hardly be conceived, though I am certain there is one being made up about Sarah Palin as I write this.

The other seeks proof that a candidate for President of the United States meets the most basic qualifications for that office under the United States Constitution.  I am pretty sure that Obama was native-born, but is proof really too much to ask?

To me, it’s like being carded when ordering a beer.  Sure, I look about my age, and that age is double the legal drinking age, but so what?  Here’s my I.D.

How is asking for Obama’s proof of eligibility for office the same as declaring the President and countless others guilty of mass murder in the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history?  Yet the media treats “birthers” as at best the same as “truthers,” and often far worse.

Anyway, I should probably care more, but I can’t really get too excited about the birth certificate issue.  That’s not really the point of this post.

The point is my enjoyment at watching a political stunt go awry.  Meet the Governor of Hawaii:

Governor Neil Abercrombie is facing renewed pressure over Obama's Hawaiin birthright

[BTW — How does one become Governor of Hawaii without a decent tan?  Wouldn’t John Boehner be more appropriate?]

He thought it would be a great idea to settle the issue, once and for all, so President Obama would not have to confront it in the 2012 election.   It didn’t really work out that way:

Pressure was mounting on Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie today amid increasing confusion over whether President Obama was born there.

Abercrombie said on Tuesday that an investigation had unearthed papers proving Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961.

He told Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser: ‘It actually exists in the archives, written down,’ he said.

But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama’s birth that someone had made in the state archives and not a birth certificate.

And in the same interview Abercrombie suggested that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health.

Instead of settling the matter, Abercrombie gave it new life.  The media has tried desperately to declare the issue to be off limits and outside the boundaries of acceptable conversation, but Abercrombie just made that so much more difficult.

For some reason, the Bud Lite “real man of genius” jingle is now stuck in my head.
