Our Future Under Obamacare

Recall that President Obama’s recess appointee to run the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Dr. Donald Berwick, is an is also an “outspoken proponent of the British health care system.”  Recall also a few pearls of wisdom he has offered in the past, as recounted here:

“I cannot believe that the individual healthcare consumer can enforce through choice the proper configurations of a system as massive and complex as healthcare. That is for leaders to do.”

“The U.K. has people in charge of its health care- people with the clear duty and much of the authority to take on the challenge of changing the system as a whole. The U.S. does not”

Now let’s see how the dear leaders in the U.K. are doing.  Not so well: “The NHS could soon reach ‘breaking point’ due to increasing demands on the service, cuts in doctors’ hours and financial cutbacks, senior doctors warned.”

You see, the market does a far better job of allocating resource than the so-called leaders, such as Dr. Berwick, who think they know better. True health insurance reform would look for ways to free up the market — such as by eliminating the tax incentives that tie most health insurance plans to employment rather than allowing employees to take their insurance wherever they go — rather than exerting more control over it.

UPDATE:  Under Obamacare — 40% of doctors in the U.S. are planning to stop providing patient care in the next three years; 60% will no longer take or severely restrict taking certain patients; 56% think patient care will be worse.
