The New York Nanny State Continues Its Expansion

The NY city council is now going to require dual flush” toilets, low flow showerheads, special urinals and sink faucets, water fountains that have separate spouts for drinking and for filling water bottles, and so on.  Having grown up in the West, I am very cognizant of the need to conserve water.  But micro-managing every aspect of peoples’ lives is an infringement on freedom and personal choice.

Moreover, this kind of regulation is a form of hidden taxation.  In addition to the substantial direct tax burdens faced by NY residents, they will have to pay additional costs for each of these special toilets, water fountains, etc.  These costs will not be reflected in the actual tax bills residents pay, but they are real costs imposed by government requirements.  Unfortunately, because these kinds of costs of government are indirect, people often do not realize the total burden being imposed by the regulatory state.
