Terrible Fires Are Burning West Of Boulder, Colorado

Looking out my office window, the air is much more hazy than usual for a Fall day in Colorado.  That is becasue there is a massive fire burning in the foothills West of Boulder.

The area that is burning is beautiful rugged foothills terrain, with lots of homes, ranging from older ramshackle mountain cabins to massive mountain McMansions.  Current estimates are that the fire encompasses 3,500 acres, and it is certain that dozens of structures have already burned.

Sadly, it is also almost certain that the fire was started by human carelessness or maliciousness (probably the former).  My wife and I went hiking in the stunning Brainard Lake area, which is just a few miles West of the burn area, on both Saturday and Sunday.  There was no thunderstorm activity at all.  None.  But there were strong gusty winds that continued through Monday and caused the fire to expand rapidly.

This should be a reminder to all of us how quickly a moment of carelessness can lead to tragedy.
