Another Baghdad Bob Sighting, Now At The Denver Post

Media types continue trying to spin the Colorado Senate primary outcome as a big win for Obama & Co., leading to “the resurgent chances Democrats have in Colorado” according to Chuck Plunkett, writing at the Denver Post’s The Spot blog:

How much, if anything, have Republicans learned since the mighty Organizing for America machine rolled through the country in 2008?

Because despite a little trouble in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts, Team Obama is still awfully smart, organized and powerful, as The Denver Post’s Michael Riley reports this morning.

Contrast OFA’s backing of Bennet with the Grand Old Party’s relationship with Ken Buck, and what do you see?

Because Buck wasn’t the anointed one in his contest with McCain-picked Jane Norton, he was the underdog in terms of campaign cash and organization in Colorado’s Senate primaries.

Let’s unpack this a bit.

According to Plunkett, the Democratic machine had “more lead time than Democrats had in . . . the Massachusetts special election or the Pennsylvania primary, the Democratic National Committee’s ‘targeting team’ ran sophisticated models of voter behavior throughout Colorado, then fed the data to hundreds of door-knockers and other volunteers over weeks and months[,]” and then “Organizing for America, the rebranded Obama campaign operation, ran phone banks that paralleled Bennet’s as the crucial days before the primary counted down.”  As of August 3, Bennet also had spent $5.8 million to Romanoff’s $1.7 million.

All of this added up to Obama-backed Bennet’s achieving his great 54/46 victory over Romanoff.

On the other hand, “[b]ecause Buck wasn’t the anointed one in his contest with McCain-picked Jane Norton, he was the underdog in terms of campaign cash and organization in Colorado’s Senate primaries.”

Without the backing of the party or much money, Buck won 52/48.  And Norton got more votes in her losing bid (197,143) than Bennet did in his Obama-backed successful one (183,521).

It seems that the mighty Obama machine was wildly unsuccessful in moving the needle or generating voter excitement and turnout.  It looks like a Rube Goldberg machine more than anything.
